Policy for Remediation of Seminarians

Diocese of Central Florida

General Expectations

The Diocese of Central Florida is committed to insuring to the greatest extent possible that clergy are prepared for their ministries.  The Diocese expects our seminarians to excel both academically and with spiritual maturity.  We recognize that this preparation occurs first at the parish level and in the diocese and then at seminary.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of that preparation the Commission on Ministry and the Bishop will consider the following (but not limited to the following):

·        Recommendations of the Parish and their clergy

·        Work of the COM including BACAM

·        Seminary transcripts and recommendations by the seminary

·        Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) evaluations

·        General Ordination Exam (GOE) results

·        Psychological testing

·        Fulfillment of all other canonical requirements

General Ordination Exams

It is expected that all seminarians will take the GOEs in January of their last year of academic work at seminary.  The Diocese will pay the registration fee for any person who is formally in the ordination process as a Postulant or Candidate.  In general it is expected that seminarians demonstrate proficiency in the seven canonical areas covered by the GOEs by scoring a 3 (indicating a “satisfactory” grade) or higher.

PROBLEMATIC RATINGS ON THE GOEs

For those who score a 2 (indicating a “problematic” grade) the Diocese will require that seminarian to participate in the Remedial Study Program for Candidates for Ordination (RSP) except that a Candidate receiving an overall average of 3 or higher may be excused from Remediation.  Remedial work will be in each area where a problematic grade was received, allowing 60 days for each problematic area. The maximum remediation for all areas is 180 days following ordination as a transitional deacon.

Seminarians who score a 2 in any area will be instructed to meet with the RSP Director who will match the seminarian with a tutor.  Tutors will meet with the seminarian assigned to them to establish a set of realistic and mutually agreed upon learning objectives and to develop a learning plan to achieve these objectives.  The Director will evaluate and approve the program of remediation and serve as a resource to the tutor(s).

Upon completion of the objectives of the plan of remediation the Tutor will report to the RSP Director and to the COM. The Director will submit a written evaluation and recommendation to the Bishop and the COM.

UNSATISFACTORY RATINGS ON THE GOEs

For those who score a 1 (indicating an “unsatisfactory” grade) the Diocese will require that seminarian to work with a resource person of the Commission’s choosing.  It is expected that the remediation will be similar to the instruction received in an accredited seminary and will culminate in retaking a test in that area(s) similar in content and format to the GOEs.  This retesting will be under the direction of the COM and the Bishop.  In general it is expected that this retesting will occur within six months of the seminarian’s graduation.

ORDINATION TO THE TRANSITIONAL DIACONATE

A Candidate may be recommended for ordination to the Transitional Diaconate, all other requirements being fulfilled, even though that seminarian received a 2 (Problematic rating) or a 1 (Unsatisfactory rating) at the discretion of the Bishop, COM and Standing Committee.  However during the period of their transitional diaconate they shall successfully complete the RSP program if they received a 2 or be retested if they received a 1 and receive at least a satisfactory rating prior to a recommendation for ordination as a priest.
